The Gray Man‘ sees a deadly cat-and-mouse chase as Chris Evans’ Lloyd Hansen goes after Ryan Gosling’s Sierra Six, in a world of shadow espionage. The first time Six comes up against the antagonist, he’s nonplussed at the encounter and comments on Hansen’s appearance, including his white pants and “trash stache”.

This is a reference to the moustache Evans’ character sports in the movie. It makes a bold statement and is inspired by the 70s. Wahl, the grooming product company, defines a trash stache as a tidier facial hair option, also known as the pencil moustache.

Hansen’s moustache is much thicker than a pencil moustache, and Six’s reference to “trash stache” might be a nod to the common parlance where a moustache usually sported by a white working-class American, from a politically reactionary state, is called as such since the people are referred to as “white trash” by those on the opposite end of the political spectrum.

While it makes for a distinctive look and is a change from Evans playing a usually clean-shaven Captain America, the “trash stache” has found an immense fan base of its own.

Netflix decided to tap into its popularity and is selling trash staches claiming they’re the perfect disguise for a secret agent.

The Russo brothers shared the post asking whether these staches smell like Chris Evans.

In ‘The Gray Man’, it is revealed that Evans’ character went to Harvard and played “ball” in college. He also became close with Denny Carmichael and Suzanne Brewer during his time in the Ivy League college, and when the two later had careers in the CIA, they brought on Hansen but he was let go after five and a half months for a lack of morals and affinity for unsanctioned torture. Hansen then started his own private outfit – Hansen Government Services – doing spots of contract work for the CIA.
