Blonde, the Netflix movie on Marilyn Monroe’s life, shows the American actor coming apart under the spotlight in the new trailer. 

Monroe meets Joe DiMaggio, played by Bobby Cannavale. The American baseball player, who’d be Monroe’s second husband, tells her that she’s meant for the screen. Viewers get a glimpse into the darker side of Norma Jean’s or Monroe’s fame, when the actor says she was “discovered”, and walks down red-carpeted halls with Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend playing. 

In the scene, Monroe looks uncomfortable as a man inspects her up close.

She’s also seen with Adrien Brody’s Arthur Miller, who was Monroe’s third husband. The scenes are homages to actual images and snapshots from Monroe’s life, and the 34-year-old de Armas confirmed “Every scene is inspired by an existing photograph”, adding, “The first question was always, ‘What was Norma Jeane feeling here?’ … Fame is what made Marilyn the most visible person in the world, but it also made Norma the most invisible”, Netflix Queue reported. 

The movie is based on Joyce Carol Oates’ bestselling novel of the same name and has gotten an NC-17 rating. The official synopsis reads, “[The film] boldly reimagines the life of one of Hollywood’s most enduring icons, Marilyn Monroe. From her volatile childhood as Norma Jeane, through her rise to stardom and romantic entanglements, ‘Blonde’ blurs the lines of fact and fiction to explore the widening split between her public and private selves.”

In the Blonde trailer, de Armas’ Monroe says, “Marilyn doesn’t exist. When I come out of my dressing room, I’m Norma Jeane. I’m still her when the camera’s rolling. Marilyn Monroe only exists on the screen.” 

Scenes from the trailer are easily recognizable, like the white billowing dress or Monroe singing Happy Birthday to then-US president John F Kennedy. 

Blonde is slated to release on September 23, 2022.
