A man cycling around the Kendall campus of Miami Dade College on Wednesday morning with an umbrella in his backpack was mistaken for an armed person, sending the campus into a lockdown

Police received a call on Wednesday morning about
“a person walking with a rifle around campus wearing a bulletproof vest”, CBS4 reported.

Kendall Campus at 11011 SW 104th St was placed under lockdown until cops located the armed suspect. 

“Miami-Dade College Kendall Campus is currently on lockdown due to a search for a suspicious person. Please avoid the area due to possible road closures,” Miami Dade police tweeted.

All those on campus were asked to remain inside their offices with the doors locked.

The Reporter reported that the following message was played over campus speaker.

“Attention please a dangerous situation has been confirmed on campus. The appropriate personal are responding. Seek shelter immediately at a secure location and await further instructions.”

Following a search, the suspect was detailed. Cops took a look inside his military-style backpack and found a black umbrella handle sticking out of the side of it. Authorities confirmed it was a misunderstanding. 

“This is a new day. These situations have to be taken seriously,” Miami Dade College’s Director of Communications Juan Mendieta said. “Anybody who has a responsibility of protecting children and students has to take this seriously.”

“I don’t want to call it a drill because this was actually a rapid response. There were armed officials who went throughout the campus and swept all the areas, so this was not a drill. But it was a good exercise with a good outcome that makes us feel confident about the upcoming school year,” he added.
