Orange County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a shooting outside Hillsborough city limits had left one man dead, and the suspect remains at large.

Deputies responded to calls of shots fired at the 200 building at 405 Thomas Burke Drive, outside Hillsborough city limits. They arrived and located a 26-year-old man who suffered gunshot wounds and died at the scene.

Authorities believe that the shooter left the scene in a vehicle since K9 units tracked the scent through the woods to Interstate 85, where the trail came to an end.

There is no information yet on the suspect or the victim, and deputies believe this to be an isolated incident and it isn’t a random act of violence.

California has one of the strongest gun laws in the country, meant to keep people safe. Orange County falls within the state borders and is subject to its gun laws which ensure that an individual is 21 or older to buy, own, and possess firearms. Laws also make it a crime for a person to conceal and carry a firearm unless there is a permit for the same. Open carry is against the law.

The spate of shootings and gun violence in the US has refocused the conversation on the importance of gun control, though many quarters are still pro-gun rights.
