French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard, who is known to revolutionise cinema in the 1960s, died at age 91. Multiple French media outlets confirmed that they had learned the news of his death from his relatives on Tuesday. The cause of death is unclear.

The legendary director became popular after the release of his debut feature film Breathless, which recently also found its place in Indian cinema.

Breathless, released in March 1960, was Godard’s first big success. It stars Jean-Paul Belmondo, who played the role of a penniless young thief who models himself on Hollywood movie gangsters and who, after he shoots a police officer, goes on the run to Italy with his American girlfriend, played by Jean Seeberg.

Shot entirely in Odisha, Adieu Godard follows the story of an old man named Ananda who is addicted to pornography and secretly watches adult films with some men in the evening.

One day, the protagonist, Choudhary Bikash Dash, accidentally brings home a DVD after assuming it to be pornography. But it turned out to be the 1960 film Breathless, the first and the most iconic movie shot by Jean-Luc Godard.

Ananda gets attracted by the newness and gradually develops an obsession. He then attempts to host a film festival on Godard in their village.

The name of the movie suggests that it is a tribute to Godard, but it is not a quintessential tribute film, according to director Amartya Bhattacharyya.

Adieu Godard became the first Odia film to have a world premiere at the Moscow International Film Festival, news agency PTI reported. It also featured in 20 international film festivals after Moscow. The movie has won six awards, including the best picture in the Indian languages section at the prestigious Kolkata International Film Festival this year.
