Buffalo Bills’ Damar Hamlin’s helmet reflects the motto of his life, which was simply, “Choose Love. This message was reflected in the actions and reactions of his fans and teammates after he collapsed on the field on Monday night during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals. 

“Choose Love” is the newest of seven messages that the NFL permits its players to display on their helmets. However, unlike the other messages allowed for display by the league in the past, it makes an effort to be more inclusive and progressive socially, this message seems a little vague.

However, the true meaning behind the phrase became apparent in the wake of Hamlin suffering a cardiac arrest following the hit from an open field tackle on Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins. Hamlin was transferred to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for further testing and treatment, where he remains sedated. 

Although the doctors have said the next 12 to 24 hours would be critical for the player’s road to recovery, and no further updates were given on Monday night, both Bills and Bengals fans gathered outside the medical center to hold a candlelight vigil, showing how the sports community can come together in the light of a tragedy.

His teammates also showed immense support by forming a human shield around Hamlin when he was receiving treatment on the field after he collapsed. The Bills team trainers rushed to the spot where he has collapsed within 10 seconds and started treating the player. In less than five minutes, an ambulance was brought onto the field. Hamlin received CPR and was then taken to the hospital.

The body language of the Bills players said it all. Josh Allen held his hands to his mouth as if in horror. Tears streamed down Stefon Diggs’ cheeks. Players pulled at their jerseys and hugged one another.

Then there were supporters outside of the sports realm who found ways to show their love to Hamlin.  His fans took the opportunity to donate more than $3 million to Hamlin’s charitable toy drive page. Others took to social media to share photos, videos, and stories of Hamlin, showcasing him as an admirable man with dreams of playing football.
