Are guns allowed inside Regis University?

Americans were left shocked when news emerged that an Armed man with two others was spotted inside the Northwest Denver campus of Regis University on Tuesday night, September 6, 2022. University officials put the campus on lockdown soon after the sighting and notified the Denver Police Department of the incident.

According to a tweet by the Regis University, three unidentified persons were spotted in the Northwest Denver Campus on Tuesday night sometime before 9:30 pm, one of whom was carrying a ‘long gun’, possibly a shotgun. According to university officials, the armed man was moving toward the Fieldhouse to the east, and urged students to seek shelter and stay there until the threat was cleared by the police.

Gun violence is nothing new in the United States and shooting incidents have previously taken place in educational institutes in the country. The Denver Police Department later revealed that nobody matching the description was found inside the campus, however, the search for the unidentified armed person continues. Let’s take a closer look at the gun laws inside the Northwest Denver campus of Regis University.

According to security and fire report of Regis University that was published in 2020, it provides a ‘safe working and learning’ atmosphere at its campus. This is why the possession or use of weapons, including firearms, explosives and fireworks are prohibited inside the university premises.

The Regis University report also states that even if a person with a valid concealed weapons permit carries any weapon inside its premises, it is a direct violation of its weapons policy. However, it also says that law enforcement officers may carry their department-issued handguns or other weapons inside the campus if it is required by their duties.

According to the weapons policy of Regis University, Campus Safety officers are also permitted to carry ‘less-lethal weapons’, given the completion of the required training.
