The Central
Bureau of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Friday opposed a plea in the Supreme
Court (SC) filed against holding compartment examination for class XII
students, which was slated to be held at the end of September. The CBSE told the top court that it is likely to conduct compartment examination for students of Classes 10, 12 by September end, news agency ANI reported.
The three-judge
bench, comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar, Dinesh Maheshwari and Sanjiv Khanna,
asked the counsel for the petitioner whether postponing the exams will be beneficial
to the students.
“Without
examination where do you stand. Is there any other methodology contemplated by
CBSE,” the bench asked.
The CBSE told
the court that the number of examination centers across the country have been
increased from 575 to 1,278.
“We have
taken a decision that in a class where 40 students could sit, now only 12 will
sit and we are taking all precautions,” the counsel representing the CBSE said.
“All
necessary measures are being taken. The notification is likely to be issued
soon. The examinations are to be held in September,” he added.
The SC has directed
the board to file an affidavit in this regard and specify schemes, dates and
details regarding the proposed examinations.
The next
hearing is scheduled for September 10.
The counsel
for the petitioner said students will not be able to apply for further studies
as admissions in universities will close by the time compartment examinations
will be held.
In reply, the
counsel for CBSE said that on the one hand, petitioner wanted cancellation of
examinations and then also raised the issue of admissions in universities.
