US President Joe Biden’s pick for the position of Education Secretary, Miguel Cardona, was confirmed by the US Senate with a 64-33 vote. He is expected to prioritise his efforts towards a promise made by Biden during his election campaign, to get the students of America back to school in a safe manner and prevent any hampering in their education. 

In the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, which overlooks the hearing of Education Secretary candidates, he said he plans to address “inequities head-on”, reported ABC News.

In a statement at the hearing, he said, “I recognize the frustration and distrust and fear that is out there and if confirmed as secretary of education, I’ll do everything in my power to make sure that our rollout strategy for reopening schools includes communication on how to safely reopen schools.”

The 45-year-old has previously served as the commissioner of education in the state of Connecticut but also contributed by teaching elementary school students, according to the Department of Education, Connecticut.

He also paved the way for many by becoming the first-ever Latino to serve as the state’s education commissioner, US President Joe Biden’s team announced while declaring his nomination for the position.
