United States President Joe Biden’s
new trade negotiator Katherine Tai said recently in an interview that Washington is not yet ready to lift tariffs from Chinese imports, but could be open to
have discussions with the Chinese authorities, AFP reported.
Tai, in her interview with The Wall Street
Journal, highlighted that the economic stance was hitting business in the country,
but is also protecting economic interests of various such establishments across
the US.

“I have heard people say,
‘Please just take these tariffs off,’”, Tai was quoted by AFP as saying, before
warning that a sudden lifting of the restrictions could harm the American economy
and that the move would have to be relayed to the public as well as economic
actors could make adjustments.
The nod prior to the move was essential
for “companies, traders, manufacturers or their workers”, AFP further
quoted her as saying, as the latter noted that they needed to plan for their
futures.

A trade accord was signed between US
and China under the-then US president Donald Trump on January, 2020, after a financial
tug-of-war between the two that left bruises on either side.
Tai had previously called up Japanese
ministers, with whom she discussed the same topic of China’s trade practices, as well as saying in her confirmation hearing that she supported a “holistic review” on China.
