Ram Gopal Verma’s cult film ‘Satya’ completes 22 years on July 3, 2020. The film explored the criminal world of Mumbai and was the first of Varma’s Gangster trilogy about organised crime in India.   

Written by Saurabh Shukla and Anurag Kashyap the film starred J. D. Chakravarthy, Manoj Bajpayee, Urmila Matondkar, Shukla and Shefali Shah in lead roles.  The film proved to be Bajpayee’s breakthrough into Hindi cinema. 

Released on July 3, 1998, the film didn’t star a big name but went on to become a sleeper hit and later became one of the finest Indian crime film.

Talking about the same, Bajpayee took to his Instagram to share the iconic moment. He wrote, “And my life changed…!!! Can’t forget the 3rd July 1998 ..monsoon..it was declared a flop and how it turned out to be biggest hit ..ran for 25 weeks..!!satya!!! Edited by Apurva Asrani (19 years then). Written by Anurag Kashyap (23 years then) And Saurabh shukla directed by THE RGV music by Sandip Chowta!! (sic).” 

‘Satya’ was a critical and commercial success , grossing more than Rs 15 crore and helped launch the career of both Anurag Kashyap and Bajpayee. Kashyap also tweeted about the film completing 22 years. 

 The film won six Filmfare Awards and a National Film Award.
