Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor Andy Samberg has addressed how the show is approaching season 8 following George Floyd’s death and the nation-wide protests.

Floyd was killed in police custody, leading to widespread protests across the US calling out the the police force for their brutal action and demanding a change. People continue to speak out against systemic racism in law enforcement.

In an interview given to people magazine, Samberg said that the writers and cast are still figuring out how they can make a new season of the NBC sitcom – which centres on a group of cops portrayed as goofy and likeable heroes – that they can “feel morally okay” about.

“We’re taking a step back, and the writers are all rethinking how we’re going to move forward, as well as the cast,” explained the actor who plays the role of cop Jake Peralta.

“We’re all in touch and kind of discussing how you make a comedy show about police right now and if we can find a way of doing that that we all feel morally okay about.

“I know that we’ll figure it out, but it’s definitely a challenge. So we’ll see how it goes.” he further added.

Co-star Terry Crews, who plays the role of Sargent Terry, recently confirmed that the show scrapped scripts for the first four episodes of the new season in the wake of Floyd’s death.

“The writers had four episodes all ready to go, and they just threw them in the trash,” he said last month. “We have to start over. Right now, we don’t know which direction it’s going to go in.”

The comedy is expected to return to NBC this fall in the US.
