A complicated dating history packed with domestic abuse did not hold American singer-songwriter Chris Brown back from sending good wishes to his ex-girlfriend Rihanna, who recently welcomed a baby boy with rapper A$AP Rocky.

As headlines of Rihanna giving birth began floating on the internet, Brown uploaded a cryptic story on his Instagram handle containing the text “congratulations” with a heart, praying hands and pregnant woman emoji.

While his post did not publicly reveal who he addressed, it did create a divide on social media, with some users lauding the 33-year-old for wishing Rihanna and showcasing “growth” and “maturity”, and others bashing him for attempting to lurk in the Barbadian singer’s good books.

“Yall need to grow tf up honestly,” one user wrote.

“You people made the Chris Brown trend ever since Rihanna announced her pregnancy. Saying congratulations is called growth and maturity,” the user added.

Brown and Rihanna dated between 2007 and 2009 until a violent altercation between the two erupted during the 2009 Grammys. Brown was arrested following a quarrel with the ‘Umbrella’ vocalist in a rented Lamborghini. Soon after the incident, images of a bruised and bloodied Rihanna began circulating on the internet.

Later on, Brown accepted a plea deal that comprised counseling on domestic violence, five years of probation and community work as an alternative to jail time.

Now, the ‘Look at Me Now’ singer is a father to newborn daughter Lovely Symphani Brown, 7-year-old daughter Royalty and 2-year-old son Aeko.

On the other hand, in an old interview with Diane Sawyer, Rihanna shared how she feels about the singer.

“No, I don’t hate him at all. I actually love and care about him and I think, I’m concerned about him doing well. I want him to do well, have a great career, have a great life,” she said in 2009.
