It seems that ‘Lovecraft Country’, which was not renewed for a second season, had the last laugh. The show has picked up 18 Emmy Awards nominations on Tuesday. The nominations came two weeks after HBO announced that that the show will not have season two.

‘Lovecraft Country’ is based on the 2016 novel by Matt Ruff and is set in the US of 1950. It traces the journey of Atticus, an Army veteran, played by Jonathan Majors and his quest to find his missing father, played by Michael Kenneth Williams. The show’s final episode aired in October last year.

The show has been nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor (Jonathan Majors), and Outstanding Lead Actress (Jurnee Smollett), among others.

On July 2, just two days after the Emmy voting deadline, HBO announced that ‘Lovecraft Country’ will not be revamped for a second season. 

“We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green (show’s creator), who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey,” it had said in a statement then.

Shortly after the announcement, Green disclosed that she had pitched season 2 to HBO. 

The 73rd Emmy Awards, known as the Oscars of the TV industry, will be held on September 19. Its nominations were announced on Tuesday (July 13).

Netflix’s royal drama series ‘The Crown’ and Star Wars series The Mandalorian’ topped the nominations list with 24 nods. It was followed by Disney+ series ‘WandaVision’ with 23 nods and Apple TV+ comedy ‘Ted Lasso’ that got 20 nominations.
