The 78th Golden Globe Awards – the wilder, younger sibling of the Academy Awards – is set to take place on February 28, 2021. Over the years, the award ceremony has seen everything from drunken celebrities to poorly timed bathroom breaks to candid speeches and some politically incorrect statements. And while Hollywood is in preparation for the big night, Opoyi has rounded up the most hilarious and memorable Golden Globes moments of all time.

Golden Globes 1996: Brad Pitt’s speech about indigestion

Unlike other celebrities and their sweet thank you notes, Brad took the audience by surprise when he started off his speech by talking about how he is taking medication to treat his diarrhoea. “I would like to thank the makers of Kaopectate. They have done a great service for their fellow man,” Brad said. While everybody was happy that the actor won best supporting actor award for ’12 Monkeys’, they were stuck in an awkward situation where there was no way out.

Golden Globes 2001: Renee Zellweger’s ill-timed bathroom break

When Renee was announced as the Golden Globe winner for best actress in a musical or comedy for ‘Nurse Betty’ by Hugh Grant, she was nowhere to be found. It was only after Hugh started accepting the award on her behalf that Renee rushed onto the stage and said she had been in the bathroom taking lipstick off her teeth.

Golden Globes 2001: Elizabeth Taylor’s drunken night

The legend herself was tasked with announcing the award for best drama picture but it seemed she might have indulged in cocktails just before her appearance on stage. Carrying the important envelope, Elizabeth asked, “What, I don’t open this?” Thankfully, Dick Clark helped her out. By the way, if you Google “Hollywood’s drunkest night,” it returns results for the Golden Globes.

Golden Globes 2011: Host Ricky Gervais and his offensive jokes

While hosting the night, British comedian Ricky Gervais offended almost all the prominent celebrities that were in the audience, including Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp and Charlie Sheen. “Welcome to the 68th annual Golden Globe awards. It’s going to be a night of Partying and heavy drinking. Or, as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast,” he said. Thanks to Ricky’s sense of humour, the show turned out to be outstandingly entertaining.

Golden Globes 2017: Natalie Portman’s jibe on male-dominated award nominations

In recent years, the history of women and people of colour going unrecognized at Hollywood award shows has come under increased scrutiny and four years back Natalie mocked the award jury for the same. While presenting the award for best director on stage, the actor hit everyone with the instantly iconic line, “And here are the all-male nominees.” The line appeared to make the audience laugh but all of them knew what it was actually about.
