The frontman of the British heavy metal band Grim Reaper, Steve Grimmett, has passed away at the age of 62. The cause of death has not been revealed yet.

Steve Grimmett’s son, Russ Grimmett, confirmed the information on Facebook, stating: “We can’t begin to put into words the current feelings. But as dad was so well known the news is starting to reach out earlier than we would have liked. Unfortunately, our dad passed away today and leaves a massive hole in the world and our hearts.”

Grim Reaper was formed in Worcestershire in 1979.

Grimmett joined the band in 1982, taking over from Paul de Mercado on vocals. Grimmett ended up being the group’s lone member during its two separate runs—until 1988 and then once more from 2006 until the present.

In 1983, RCA handled the distribution of their debut record, See You in Hell. It reached its peak on the US Billboard album chart at position 73. The band enjoyed success up until the point when legal issues with their record label delayed the release of their third album for nearly two years, during which thrash and speed metal had supplanted their melodic sound as the most popular genres of metal.

They reunited in 2006 as a result of demands to perform at festivals and go on tour. 2016 saw the release of Walking in the Shadows, the group’s first brand-new studio album under their current moniker, Steve Grimmett’s Grim Reaper.

Grimmett was admitted to the hospital in January 2017 while performing in Ecuador due to an infection in his right leg. Part of a leg was amputated after surgery. The group continued their tour as he started to walk once more with a prosthetic leg.

At the Gates, their subsequent album, was released in 2019. According to Grimmett, “It’s about me almost dying when I lost my leg in Ecuador.” He claimed that PTSD and depression had been affecting him.
