Taylor Swift sang her song Dear John live during a tour stop in Minneapolis on Saturday, for the first time in a little over a decade.

Since the song’s release in 2010, when she had a contentious breakup with John Mayer, fans have thought the lyrics are about him. The singer-songwriter also hinted onstage this past Saturday that she will be reissuing Dear John as part of “Taylor’s Version” of her 2010 album Speak Now.

Dear John was originally performed live by Swift in 2012 in Auckland, New Zealand, as part of a concert engagement. On July 7, she will release her ‘Taylor’s Version’ of Speak Now, which will feature a fresh rendition of Dear John.

Here’s all you need to know about John Mayer and Taylor Swift:

John Mayer and Taylor Swift age gap:

Taylor Swift and John Mayer have a 12-year age gap. John Mayer was born on October 16, 1977, whereas Taylor Swift was born on December 13, 1989. Between December 2009 and February 2010, when she was 19 and he was 31, Swift and Mayer reportedly dated.

John Mayer and Taylor Swift relationship timeline:

2009

Swift was originally contacted by Mayer over Twitter in March 2009, which was reportedly the only method he could get in touch with her. Mayer compared the Fearless singer to Fleetwood Mac’s legendary Stevie Nicks in a tweet about wanting to record a song with her.

May to December 2009

Mayer joined Swift on stage as she started her Fearless tour and toured the country. He unexpectedly appeared during her concert at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, coming out to sing White Horse and Your Body Is A Wonderland.

His unexpected guest appearances sparked a Swiftie meltdown, and in June 2009, the duo released Half of My Heart.

The words to Half of My Heart were pretty appropriate given how events between these two developed.

2010

The two have never explicitly said when they started dating. They were allegedly a “official couple” from December 2009 till about mid-2010. There were rumors that the couple broke up in February 2010, which would explain some of the subsequent occurrences in an unexpected way.

When Mayer gave Swift an award at the 41st Annual Songwriters Hall of Fame Ceremony in June 2010, there didn’t seem to be any ill will between the two.

Dear John

A “Dear John letter” is one you write to your sweetheart to let them know you don’t feel the same way about them anymore. Additionally, John is plainly his name. So, there you go.
One of the best songs, “absolutely scorcher,” was published in October 2010 along with Taylor’s Speak Now album.

Swift wore a purple gown similar to the one she was wearing when Mayer gave her the Songwriters Award while playing Dear John on tour. Swifties are aware that when it comes to Swift, the Queen of hiding Easter Eggs for followers, there is no such thing as coincidence.

Mayer bemoaned his ex-girlfriend’s song in a 2012 interview with Rolling Stone and claimed he “didn’t deserve” to be called out.

“It made me feel terrible. It was a really lousy thing to do. I never got an email. I never got a phone call. I was really caught off guard. It’s cheap songwriting. It’s abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, ‘Wait til he gets a load of this!’ That’s bulls–t,” Mayer told Rolling Stone.

Paper Doll

Mayer discussed an ex-girlfriend who he “was good to” in the song Paper Doll and attributes the breakup to the fact that she was “a little paper doll” and too delicate to handle the relationship.

The lyrics of Paper Doll and Dear John had a lot in common, virtually guaranteeing that the song was about Swift.
