The Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday approved a
petition by rapper Kanye West to
formally alter his name to simply “Ye,” with no middle or last name.
Judge Michelle Williams Court granted the singer’s request,
who filed his petition on August 24 and said that he was changing his name for
personal reasons.

In June 2018, the 44-year-old performer released his eighth
studio album, “Ye.” For a long time, it’s been his Twitter handle.
In the same year, the singer told radio presenter Big Boy
that he believes “ye” is “the most commonly used word in the
Bible,” and that it signifies “you” in the Bible.
“So it’s, I’m
you, I’m us, it’s us,” he remarked at the time. “It went from being
Kanye, which means ‘The only one,’ to just ‘Ye,’ just being a reflection of our
good, our bad, our confused, everything. And I’m just more of a reflection of
who we are. This is beings.”

In June of
2018, Kanye West had hinted at his possible name change via a tweet,
“Who or what is Kanye West with no ego? Just Ye.” Then, in September
of that same year, he typed on Twitter, “The being formally known as Kanye
West. I am YE.”
Merriam Webster online concurs in terms of meaning,
however, adds that ‘ye’ is a plural version of “you,” not
singular, and that it is “now used especially in ecclesiastical or
literary language.” The word’s more common use as an archaic variant of
“the,” as in “Ye olde abbey,” is the second definition.

Despite reports of a divorce, Ye’s wife, Kim Kardashian
West, has maintained his old last name. She even wore it on Saturday Night Live
two weekends ago.
It is unclear if (or how) the Keeping Up With the
Kardashians star will keep up with ‘Ye’ now.
