Crorepati, India’s most popular television quiz show, is returning to TV and
mobile screens on August 7. Ahead of the launch of the 14th season
of the show, KBC promos have attracted a significant amount of attention. In
the promos, Hindi cinema icon Amitabh Bachchan brings to light the sorry state
of India’s information ecosystem.

“‘I don’t believe
in taking the right decisions. I first take the decision and then ensure my
decision is the right one,’ who said this?” asks Amitabh Bachchan to a
contestant. He starts with the options: A. Bill Gates, B. Ratan Tata, when the
contestant stops him and answers Ratan Tata. Bachchan asks if he can finish
giving the options, but the contestant is confident that he has the right
answer.

The contestant
says: “We understand news from the headlines, letters from envelopes.” Bachchan
asks, “Why are you in such a hurry?” The contestant replies: “There is so much
to do in life and so little time. YOLO sir, YOLO.”

A confused Bachchan
asks: “YOLO,” and the young contestant replies: “You Only Live Once, sir.” The
contestant’s answer is incorrect. He argues that he had read a report, when
Bachchan asks, “Did you read half the report or just the headline?”

The trailer ends
with Bachchan saying in Hindi: “Gyaan jahaan sey bhi milein usey bator lijiye,
par pehle zara tatol lijiye” (Wherever you find knowledge, take it, but first
verify it.”

In another
trailer, a contestant named Guddi is on the hotseat. She is asked: “Which of
the following carries a GPS technology?” The options are: A. Typewriter, B.
Television, C. Satellite phones and D. Rs 2,000 note. The contestant
confidently replies that its the Rs 2,000 note.

When Amitabh, in
his characteristic fashion, asks her, if she is confident, Guddi says: “The
entire nation is sure about this answer.” When Amitabh reveals that the answer
is incorrect and the correct answer is Satellite phones, Guddi is taken aback.
She said she had read it in the news. Bachchan says while the fault lay with
the news source, it was she was affected. The Bollywood star then uses the same
refrain mentioned above.
