Manoj Bajpayee, who was born on April 23, 1969, is an Indian actor who works mostly in Hindi films, and also in Tamil and Telugu films. He has received three National Awards, six Filmfare Awards, two Asia Pacific Screen Awards. In 2019, he was awarded the Padma Shri from the Government of India. Bajpayee was born in Belwa, a small village in Bihar. He aspired to become a singer since his childhood. He was relocated to Delhi when he was just seventeen. There he applied for the National School of Drama (popularly known as NSD). He was rejected three times from the institution. Bajpayee continued with theatre while he was in college. Bajpayee’s debut role was a one-minute appearance in the 1994 film Drohkaal and a small role in Bandit Queen, which was also released in 1994. After a number of unnoticed roles, he played the gangster Bhiku Mhatre in the film Satya (1998) directed by Ram Gopal Verma. This film provided a breakthrough in Bajpayee’s career. After that, he worked in films like Kaun? (1999) and Shool (1999).
Bajpayee was a struggling actor when Mahesh Bhatt offered him the soap opera Swabhimaan (1995) which aired on Doordarshan. He had no problem to do the serial at low wage.
Bajpayee is known as a method actor and also a director’s actor. He is known for his unconventional roles.
Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui has cited Bajpayee’s performance in Aks as the inspiration for his role as the antagonist in the movie Kick (2014).
Bajpayee has also been vocal about the disparity in the pay he commands, in comparison to the top actors in the film industry.
