Malyalam superstar Mammootty has turned 70 today.
The three-time National Award-winning superstar made his debut with
1971 film ‘Anubhavangal Paalichakal’ and has since been a part of more than 400
features in a career spanning over four decades.  He has also
done films in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu films as well as those in Hindi and
English.

Here are some of his finest performances

Mathilukal  (Malayalam, 1989)

The versatile actor played the role of
writer-cum-activist Vaikom Muhammad Basheer in director Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s
critically-acclaimed drama. This film is also termed as one of the classic
Malyalam cinema. If you have seen the film, you will see how it features several
intense scenes though the female protagonist, voiced by Lalitha. Mammootty won
the National Award for the ‘Best Actor’ for his work in the film.

Vidheyan (1994)

Adoor
Gopalakrishnan directorial film is about the dysfunctional relationship between a slave
named Thommy (M.R. Gopakumar) and his cruel master Bhaskara Patelar
(Mammootty). Patelar forces Thommy to kill the former’s wife Saroja (Tanvi
Azmi) and sexually abuses Thommy’s wife. Mammootty won his second National Film
Award jointly for this film and Ponthan Mada.

Ponthan Mada (1994)

This T.V.
Chandran-directed film also won four National Film Awards, including one for
Mammootty. The film explores the compassionate
relationship between a colonial landlord (played by Naseeruddin Shah) and a low-caste man
( played by Mammootty).

Swathi Kiranam (Telugu, 1992)

Mammootty played a grey character in the musical
drama Swathi Kiranam, which revolved around a maestro’s attempts at ruining a
prodigy’s career. 

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar (Hindi/English, 2000)

Mammootty gave strong proof of his abilities as a
performer when he played the ‘Father of the Indian Constitution’ in Jabbar
Patel’s magnum opus. The star transformed into ‘Babasaheb’ with effortless ease.
The film received rave reviews and helped the veteran win a National Award.
