Tamil television actor Sushma Nair, best known for her role in the serial ‘Nayagi’, tied the knot with Lijo T John last month. The 23-year-old Bengaluru-born actor had started off with costume designing, before unexpectedly venturing into acting in 2018. Now, she is a much sought after television personality and a household name. In an interview with Opoyi, Sushma spoke about her career, her dream wedding, and her upcoming projects.

How did you meet your husband?

Our love story is nothing less than a romantic movie. We were neighbours and have known each other for over 10 years. There were few ups and downs in our relationship. He moved to Dubai for work and this actually brought us closer. I went to Dubai for a fashion show two years ago and we spent some time together and that’s when we both realized that we are meant to be together.

You got married in the middle of a pandemic. What was it like?

We felt this was the right time to get married. Both of us have busy schedules and the pandemic gave us some respite from work. However, we wanted to ensure that all the COVID protocols are followed. Less than 100 people attended the wedding, which took place at a church in Bengaluru. I have a lot of friends in the Tamil television industry but didn’t want them to risk their lives to attend the wedding. That’s why I decided to live stream the wedding on YouTube for all my friends and family members who weren’t able to attend it.

You are also a fashion designer. Did you design your wedding gown?

Not just my gown, I designed most of the costumes worn by our family members, including my husband’s blazer. It took several months for me to design all the clothes; I started working on them the day the wedding date was decided.

Even though you are busy with your acting career, you haven’t stopped or taken a break from fashion designing?

No. Fashion designing is my passion. I have a brand named ‘Something by Sushma’ and we are working on the website, which will go live in a few months.

What next? Are you planning on venturing into movies?

I have already completed my first Kannada movie. It was supposed to release in May last year, but got postponed due to the pandemic. It will be released later this year. It is a suspense thriller and I am playing a crucial role in the movie. However, venturing into movies doesn’t mean I am going to stop designing. I will be doing both.
