The 32-year-old Japanese-British musician referenced Healy’s current racism incident as well as his self-admitted pornography tendencies when presenting the song “STFU!” on the festival’s Woodsies stage.

“Tonight, this goes out to a white man that watches Ghetto Gaggers, and mocks Asian people on a podcast… He also owns my masters,” Sawayama remarked, squatting on the ground. “It’s plenty for me.”

During an appearance on the Adam Friedland Show podcast, Healy had discussed watching Ghetto Gaggers, a line of racially tinged pornographic flicks in which women of color are allegedly placed in submissive postures to white men.

Healy also made references to the American rapper Ice Spice in various areas of the episode. The podcast’s broadcasters incorrectly claimed that the rapper was of Hawaiian, Inuit, and Chinese ancestry while making fun of each accent.

Later on in the podcast, Healy was overheard joining in when the hosts, comedians Adam Friedland and Nick Mullen, did impersonation of Japanese workers in extermination camps.

Both Sawayama and The 1975 are under contract with the UK record company Dirty Hit. From 2018 to April 2023, Healy served as director of Dirty Hit Limited, the label’s parent company, before resigning for an undisclosed cause.

Healy issued an apology of-sorts to Ice Spice while onstage with The 1975 in Auckland, New Zealand. “I just feel a bit bad, and I’m kind of a bit sorry if I’ve offended you,” he said.

“Ice Spice, I’m sorry. It’s not because I’m annoyed that me joking got misconstrued. It’s because I don’t want Ice Spice to think I’m a d***. I love you, Ice Spice. I’m so sorry.”
