Taylor Swift has called it quits with her longtime boyfriend, Joe Alwyn. However, unlike Swift’s past record of having dramatic breakups, it was reported that her split from Alwyn was not a drama-filled one, but rather an amicable one.

According to Entertainment Tonight, which first reported this news, the relationship had simply run its course. “It’s why [Alwyn] hasn’t been spotted at any shows,” the source told the outlet. The 33-year-old singer is presently on her Eras tour, and although Alwyn has traditionally shown up at her concerts, he has been visibly absent from the Eras tour this time.

Here is a timeline of Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn’s relationship:

2016

The pair reportedly met at the Met Gala which was themed “Manus X Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.” At the time, Swift was dating Calvin Harris. Harris was absent from the fashion event and the two broke up just a month later. After that, actor Tom Hiddleston briefly slid into Swift’s dating life

Swift and her friends attended a private Kings of Leon concert at The Bowery Hotel in New York a month after ending her relationship with the Loki actor. It was reported that Alwyn was also in attendance at the event. It is unclear if they interacted.

2017

Swift revealed the bombshell news that she had secretly been dating for 3 months.

With copies of her 2019 album Lover, the singer included photocopied pages of her diary entries. On January 3, 2017, Swift wrote, “I’m essentially based in London, hiding out trying to protect us from the nasty world that just wants to ruin things. We have been together and no one has found out for 3 months now,” she added. “I want it to stay that way because I don’t want anything about this to change.”

In May of the same year, the news that Swift and Alwyn had been secretly dating for months was broken The Sun. “She’s been walking around with Joe in London using disguises, like scarves and hats, to keep her identity under wraps,” the outlet reported.

2018

Much to the surprise of her die-hard fans, during the performance of the cover of Earth, Wind & Fire’s classic song September in April 2018, Swift tweaked the first line of her song from “Do you remember the 21st night of September?” to “the 28th night of September.” According to a popular fan theory, September 28 was the day Alwyn professed his love to Swift.

On May 7, 2018, both of them posted a picture of the same cactus on their respective social media accounts even though the couple did not share any photos of them together.

In November, Swift promoted Alwyn’s movie ‘The Favourite” calling it “absolutely phenomenal.” Swift also released her albums Reputation and Lover which fans believed contained easter eggs about her relationship with Alwyn.

In a December 2018 interview, the actor was asked if he minds being the subject of his girlfriend’s songs. “No, not at all. No. It’s flattering,” he replied.

2019

Swift released her hit album Lover, which fans believed made many references to Alwyn. Swift described her seventh album as “a love letter to love, in all of its maddening, passionate, exciting, enchanting, horrific, tragic, wonderful glory.” Also, both the title track and Paper Rings’ dropped hints that Swift wanted to tie the knot with her boyfriend.

Swift gave the 2019 Grammys a skip and instead was seen attending the after-party of the BAFTA awards with Alwyn. Regardless, the two remained private about their relationship.

2020

The two chose to attend the Golden Globes together, making a rare public appearance.
In the pop star’s Netflix documentary Taylor Swift: Miss Americana, Alwyn appears briefly. At one point, Swift also opens up about the beginning of their relationship. “I also was falling in love with someone who had a really wonderfully normal, balanced, grounded life and we decided together that we wanted our relationship to be private,” she says.
They sit next to each other in the NME Awards and a fan recorded videos of them kissing each other. Several hints on Alwyn’s social media page suggested that the two of them had chosen to self-isolate together amid the Covid pandemic.

Alwyn played the piano in the backdrop of two of Swift’s songs from the album Folklore released in June of that year. “Joe plays piano beautifully, and he’s always just playing and making things up and kind of creating things,” she revealed in Disney+ film Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions. He used the alias William Bowery to do so but Swift’s fans figured it out. He co-wrote three more songs on the album Evermore.

2021

The couple took a stroll through North London Public Park in early January 2021, with the actor’s mother, Elizabeth Alwyn. During the outing, the couple held hands, suggesting to the fans that things might be getting serious in their relationship.

“She is back and forth between Nashville and England spending time with her family and with Joe’s family. They take walks in the neighborhood and go on hikes to get fresh air,” a source told E! News at the time.

After Folklore won Album of the Year at the 2021 Grammy Awards, Swift thanked Alwyn in her acceptance speech. “Joe, who is the first person that I play every single song that I write, and I had the best time writing songs with you in quarantine,” she said onstage.

2023

On April 8, 2023, it was reported that the pair had split up.
