The 2023 Met Gala will honor German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld. The event, described as ‘the Oscars of the East Coast’ will take place on May 1 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Costume Institute.
The theme of this year’s Met Gala is “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”. While the late designer did some really appreciated work in the fashion industry, he was also a controversial figure.
Several celebrities criticised Met Gala for their 2023 theme. Lagerfeld was slammed for his fat-phobic comments. He also spoke against sane sex marriages and went on to troll gay men who want to adopt children, migrants and sexual assault survivors.
Jameela Jamil, British actor popular for her role in ‘The Good Place’, said, “Karl Lagerfeld is the theme for the entire Met Gala next year. This man… was indeed, supremely talented, but used his platform is such a distinctly hateful way, mostly towards women, so repeatedly and up until the last years of his life, showing no remorse, offering no atonement, no apology, no help to groups he attacked… there was no explanation for his cruel outbursts.”
Lagerfeld died in 2019.
One interesting question on the German designer is: Was he gay and what was his relationship with Jacques de Bascher.
Karl Lagerfeld had an 18-year relationship with the French aristocrat, model, and socialite Jacques de Bascher. The designer although said that the liaison never became sexual.
The two met in Paris in 1971. They stayed together until 1989, when de Bascher died of AIDS.
“He was the person who amused me more than anyone. He was also impossible, despicable — he was perfect,” Lagerfeld said about his partner.
The Frenchman was born in July 1951 in Saigon. He spent his first years in Vietnam, where his father was a government administrator. The de Bascher family then moved to Paris.
de Bascher did his military service as a librarian aboard the naval ship L’Orage.
