Popular Nollywood actor Murphy Afolabi died in the early hours of Sunday at his residence, a week after celebrating his 49th birthday. The actor reportedly died after falling in the bathroom.

Afolabi’s death was confirmed by veteran film director and producer Tunde Ola-Yusuf.

“REST IN PEACE…May God give the family and close associates the fortitude to bear the loss. Good night Muphy Afolabi,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

Afolabi was born on May 5, 1974, in Osun State. After getting a Diploma in Theatre Arts and Film Production from Osun State Polytechnic in 2001, he debuted with a movie titled ‘Ifa Olokun’ and went on to star in several movies and TV shows over the years. He was also a producer and director.

Following his death, several of his fans took to social media to pay tribute.

“You graced our screen with your loving intonation. Our light skinned ibile. I see you in movies and start laughing waiting for you to speak. Your incantations with Ibadan accent was top notch. You gave us memes that will stand the test of time. Murphy Afolabi, Rest easy,” one person tweeted.

“A well-known legend in the Nollywood movie industry, Murphy Afolabi has been reported dead. Rip Legend,” another person tweeted.

“Death will eventually come for us all, at the time we least expect. RIP to Murphy Afolabi, Obinna Nwafor & others who died this year; Gone but not forgotten. Wishing their loved ones divine strength plus peace during this very difficult time. May the heavens comfort ’em,” another fan tweeted.
