The actor, singer, and activist Harry Belafonte passed away at the age of 96. His representative informed the New York Times that congestive heart failure was the cause of death.

With his very personal brand of folk music, Belafonte stormed the pop charts and broke through racial barriers in the 1950s. He later went on to play a significant role in the civil rights movement.

Belafonte had three marriages: the first with actress Marguerite Byrd, the second with costume designer Julie Robinson, and Belafonte was married to photographer Pamela Frank at the time of death.

Frances Marguerite Byrd 

Frances Marguerite Byrd was born on October 12, 1923, in Washington, D.C., to Robert Byrd and Martena Blue. She was an actress known for her role in  for Night of the Quarter Moon.

The late actress also finished her official education in 1941 in her birthplace. She then proceeded to the Hampton Institute, where she received her degree in early childhood education. She graduated from New York University with a master’s degree.

Byrd married renowned singer, songwriter, and actor Harry Belafonte in 1948. Although their union appeared to be stable, the ex-couple divorced one another in February 1957.

The Night of the Quarter Moon also worked in the fields of social welfare, education, and health. From 1964 to 1988, she was employed by the government. Marguerite also won numerous accolades for her contributions to the community as a volunteer and artist.

Belafonte had two daughters, activist Adrienne Belafonte Biesemeyer and actor Shari Belafonte, born in the late 1940s and 1954, from his first marriage to Marguerite Byrd, which lasted from 1948 to 1957.

Julia Robinson

Julie Robinson was born in the United States on September 14, 1928. She was a costume designer and actress best remembered for her roles in Lust for Life (1956), A Safe Place (1971), and Buck and the Preacher (1972). Previously, she married Harry Belafonte 1957. The couple had 2 children, the actor Gina and the music producer David. After 47 years of marriage, he and Robinson were divorced.

Pamela Frank

In April 2008, Harry wed again, this time to photographer Pamela Frank. Little is known about Frank or her marriage to Belafonte outside their profession, yet nearly 15 years after their initial nuptials, the couple still appeared to be quite content. Over the years, Frank has accompanied her husband to a variety of occasions, and each time they are shown together, they look content. They were married until Belafonte’s death in 2023.
