Who are NewJeans?
NewJeans, a South Korean girl music group, was formed by ADOR, a subsidiary of the Hyde Corporation. The group has five members: Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein. Their debut single titled Attention released on July 22 this year.
The idea for this new girl group had been brewing since 2019 under the direction of Min Hee-Jin. Global auditions were held in 2019 and 2020. It was initially dubbed Min Hee-jin’s Girl Group by media outlets.
NewJeans was initially scheduled to launch in 2021 but the COVID-19 pandemic forced a delay leading to the band actually coming together only this year. The group made its broadcast debut on Mnet’s M Countdown on August 4 where they performed all three singles on their EP.
On the first day of its physical release, NewJeans sold 262,815 copies, breaking several records for girl group debut in South Korea.
The members of NewJeans were already established names within the entertainment industry before joining the band.

Why is the group called NewJeans?
NewJeans, the name of the K-pop band, is a double entendre. It alludes to the idea that jeans are a timeless fashion and seeks to carve for the band a timeless image for themselves. The name is a play on the word new genes, which suggests the group seeks to usher in a new generation of Korean pop music.
