Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor has died at the age of 56.

In 2004, Irish singer Sinead O’Connor and musician Donal Lunny welcomed their third child, a son named Shane Lunny.

Who is Donal Lunny?

Donal Lunny is an Irish folk musician, producer, and founding member of influential bands in the Irish traditional music scene, such as Planxty, The Bothy Band, Moving Hearts, Coolfin, Mozaik, LAPD, and Usher’s Island. He is a multi-instrumentalist, playing left-handed guitar, bouzouki, keyboards, and bodhrán.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Born on March 10, 1947, in Tullamore, Ireland, Donal Lunny grew up in a musical family. He attended Newbridge College and later studied at the National College of Art & Design in Dublin, where he developed an interest in metalwork and music.

As a teenager, he formed a trio called Rakes of Kildare with his elder brother and Christy Moore, performing in pubs and folk clubs. Lunny’s musical journey continued as he played in bands like The Parnell Folk and Emmet Folk.

Career Highlights

In 1970, Lunny teamed up with Andy Irvine to form a musical partnership, performing at their club night called ‘The Mug’s Gig.’ This collaboration led to the formation of the iconic band Planxty in 1971, which played a significant role in popularizing Irish traditional music.

After Planxty disbanded, Lunny co-founded The Bothy Band, another influential group known for their virtuosity and enthusiasm for Irish traditional music. He later joined Moving Hearts, where the band combined traditional music with rock, jazz, and other genres.

Throughout his career, Lunny produced and played with numerous artists, including Christy Moore, Kate Bush, and Sinéad O’Connor. His work as a producer helped shape the sound of Irish music and left a lasting impact on the industry.
