South Korean actor O Yeong-su on Sunday won best TV supporting actor at the 79th Golden Globe Awards for his role in the Netflix original series “Squid Game.”
The 77-year-old actor beat Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass of “The Morning Show,” Kieran Culkin of “Succession” and Brett Goldstein of “Ted Lasso” to win the Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role on TV for his role in the South Korean survival drama.

Also known as O Se-kang, O Yeong-su was born on October 19, 1944 in North Korea’s Gyeonggi (modern-day Kaesong), where his grandfather worked as a teacher in the neighbourhood. He began acting in theatre in 1967 and appeared in over 200 productions before he began acting in film and television. He often portrayed monks due to his experience with Buddhist plays.
He and his family moved to Paju, in South Korean held by the American troops, after the 38th parallel line was drawn across the country. His father was killed and his brother was taken by North Korea during the subsequent battle.

In 2014, O Yeong-su played Prospero in a National Theater of Korea performance of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, which commemorated Shakespeare’s 450th birthday.
In July 2015, O Yeong-su appeared as a Yeonguijeong in the play Prince Yeonsangun and in the Problematic Figure in July 2015, as well as as Vasly in the play Fathers and Sons, which supported the novel of the same name in August 2015.
In a production with the Daegu Metropolitan company in 2017, he played the title of King Lear. In 2010, he directed a play of King Lear at the Daejeon Museum of Art.
In 2021, it was confirmed that he would portray a psychoanalyst in Mark St. Germain’s play “Freud’s Last Session,” which is set to premiere in Daehangno on January 7th,2022.
In the Netflix original series Squid Game, he played the elderly contestant Oh Il-nam. The show, which became the most-watched show on Netflix in its first month, brought new attention to O Yeong-su, which he was surprised and delighted to have.
He narrated an episode of the documentary series “Documentary Three Days” in November 2021.
