Tiffany Haddish, who was recently arrested in Georgia on suspicion for driving under the influence of marijuana, is an American stand-up comedian, television host, and actress.

Born in Los Angeles, California, Haddish had to take charge of her family’s wellbeing at the tender age of nine after her father left and her mother suffered severe brain damage in a motor vehicle accident. Haddish claims that her stepfather, who her mother Leola had married after the departure of Haddish’s father, tampered with the brakes of Leola’s car in the hopes that it would kill Leola and her entire family so that he could collect on their life insurance policies. However, Leola survived the crash and the children were at home that day.

Following the incident, Haddish became her family’s primary caregiver and despite the hardships she had to endure, Haddish maintains that she discovered her gift for comedy around that time.

After a difficult childhood, Haddish got her break in the stand-up comedy circuit after she won a spot at the ‘Bill Bellamy’s Who’s Got Jokes?’ competition. In 2014, she was cast in the drama series ‘If Loving You Is Wrong’ on the Oprah Winfrey Network, but left soon after for a role in the NBC sitcom, ‘The Carmichael Show’.

Her three-season stint at ‘The Carmichael Show’ turned some heads, and in 2017, she starred in the critically acclaimed comedy film ‘Girls Trip’, alongside Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Queen Latifah. In the same year, Haddish became the first African American woman to host an episode of ‘Saturday Night Live’ and her work at the show won her a Primetime Emmy Award.

Subsequently, the 42-year-old appeared in several films and television shows in minor or supporting roles, including famous ones such as ‘Sesame Street’, ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’, ‘Kevin Hart’s Guide to Black History’, and ‘Between Two Ferns: The Movie’.

In 2021, Haddish released her comedy album, Black Mitzvah, as a Netflix special, which won her the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. Haddish’s Grammy win made her the second African-American woman to win that particular award, after Academy Award-winning Whoopi Goldberg in 1986.
