Judy Solomon, a well-known journalist and former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), died at the age of 91. She died on July 14.

Helen Hoehne, the current president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), announced the passing of Judy Solomon on Saturday morning.

Hoehne, in a statement, said, “We are incredibly saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Judy Solomon. The loss is profound, but we take this opportunity to celebrate her incredible achievements in helping evolve the Golden Globes into the world-spanning award it is today. We are grateful for her support and leadership during her 67 years of membership with the HFPA.

Who was Judy Solomon?

Judy Solomon, who was born in Romania and grew up in Israel, moved to the US and established herself as a feature writer for entertainment for several Israeli newspapers. She joined the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) in 1956 and swiftly rose to become one of its important members.

Solomon oversaw substantial changes at the Golden Globes during her leadership. She was essential in securing Dick Clark as a producer and coordinating the ceremony’s transfer from the exclusive Cocoanut Grove Club to the opulent Beverly Hilton Hotel. She oversaw these modifications, and they had an enduring effect on the occasion.

She also actively promoted the contributions made by international journalists in Hollywood and tried to increase the HFPA’s charitable activities. Under her direction, the association donated the award show’s revenues to several charities, including journalism, film preservation, the arts, and education. 

She is survived by her daughters Donna Sloan and Deborah Solomon, granddaughter Ashley Sloan, her son-in-law Stephen Sloan, and other family members.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) decided to dissolve itself in light of the uproar surrounding its lack of diversity and moral dilemmas. The association transferred its assets to Golden Globe Awards Inc., a newly established nonprofit corporation, as part of this procedure.
