The caption went on to say, “We are asking for your prayers.” “Please respect the privacy of her and her family at this time. Thank you,” it added.

In 2021, Iyanla discussed Gemmia’s passing on the Making Space with Hoda Kotb podcast. Iyanla said on the program, “God must’ve really, really trusted me to give me a soul to bring into life and to trust me with the courage to send her out.

Iyanla Vanzant also has one living son, Damon, who is 53 years old and was born when she was 16.

The 69-year-old author and motivational speaker told MSNBC in 2022 that while confronting a calamity, a person should “give yourself permission to have the initial shock and horrification of whatever the change is — the loss of a job, a divorce, even a health crisis.”

“I think what happens is we try to…push through it. No, no, no! Stay there for a couple of hours, even a day or so, and then I promise you it is one step at a time,” Iyanla Vanzant said at the time.

Iyanla’s work as a public defender at the start of her career led to radio hosting work and, later, a regular guest appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show in the 1990s. She subsequently debuted Iyanla, her own talk program, in 2001. Iyanla then made a comeback with Iyanla: Fix My Life, which broadcast on Winfrey’s network OWN for 10 seasons from 2012 to 2021.
