Ray Stevenson, an Irish actor best known for starring in movies like Punisher: War Zone, King Arthur, and Thor died on Sunday, at the age of 58. His publisher has confirmed the news of his death.

Stevenson married British actress Ruth Gemmell In 1997 in London after meeting her on the set of Band of Gold (1995). They later played a married couple in Peak Practice (1997). They divorced in 2005 after eight years of marriage.

Stevenson was dating Elisabetta Caraccia before his death. They had two children together.

Career

Stevenson’s on-screen debut happened in a small TV part in 1993’s A Woman’s Guide to Adultery. A couple of years later, he landed a recurring role as Steve Dickson on Band of Gold. He appeared in Drover’s Gold and City Central before making his film debut in 1998’s The Theory of Flight as a gigolo alongside Helena Bonham Carter and Kenneth Branagh. 

His first major film role was in Antoine Fuqua’s 2004’s adventure movie King Arthur, where he played Dagonet. In 2008, Stevenson landed a starring role in the Marvel film, “Punisher: War Zone,” where he played the titular mercenary, aka Frank Castle. The character was later re-introduced in the Netflix series Daredevil.

He has also appeared in The Book of Eli, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and franchises like Marvel’s Thor and Lionsgate’s Divergent adaptation. Most recently, Stevenson appeared in the Oscar-nominated Tollywood movie “RRR.”

Stevenson was the second of three sons. His father was a Royal Air Force pilot. He moved to England with his family at the age of eight.
