Everwood and Hair actor Treat Williams passed away following a motorbike accident. He was 71.

On Monday evening, the actor’s 15-year agent, Barry McPherson, announced the actor’s passing to PEOPLE.

“He was killed this afternoon. He was making a left or a right [and] a car cut him off,” McPherson says. “I’m just devastated. He was the nicest guy. He was so talented.”

“He was an actor’s actor. Filmmakers loved him. He’s been the heart of the Hollywood since the late 1970s,” McPherson continues. “He was really proud of his performance this year. He’s been so happy with the work that I got him. He’s had a balanced career.”

Jacob Gribble, the fire chief for Dorset, Vermont, tells PEOPLE that the collision occurred on Monday at around 5 p.m. on Route 30 by Long Trail Auto close to Dorset, Vermont, though local police have not yet confirmed his name.

Williams’ motorcycle and one vehicle were involved in the collision, according to Gribble. Investigators think the car’s driver was turning and failed to notice the motorcycle. According to Gribble, the rider was the lone casualty and was airlifted to a hospital by a LifeNet chopper from Ticonderoga, New York.

Williams’ career spanned four decades and more than 120 credits, including roles in shows like Blue Bloods, The Late Shift, Chicago Fire, and Chesapeake Shores as well as movies like 1941 and Heart of Dixie by Steven Spielberg.

Along with her roles on Netflix’s Dolly Parton’s Christmas in the Square and The Noel Diary, Williams also starred in other Hallmark films, including The Christmas House, Beyond the Blackboard, Safe Harbor, and Chasing a Dream.

The actor was survived by his actress wife Pam Van Sant and their two daughters Gille and Ellie.
