United States executives, including President Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama, released statements on the passing of former Senate majority leader Harry Reid, a member of the Democratic party. Biden called him “a giant of our history.”

The Presidential statement went on to refer to Harry Reid as an “all-time great Senate Majority Leader”, one of many Biden has worked with.

Joe Biden said, “I’ve had the honor of serving with some of the all-time great Senate Majority Leaders in our history. Harry Reid was one of them. And for Harry, it wasn’t about power for power’s sake. It was about the power to do right for the people”, according to a White House press release.

“Harry looked at the challenges of the world and believed it was within our capacity to do good, to do right, and to do our part of perfecting the Union we all love”, he added.

Former President Barack Obama was also quick to react to Harry Reid’s demise. Instead of directly sharing a statement, Obama posted a letter he previously wrote to Reid when his health conditions “took a rough turn.”

In the letter, Obama wrote, “You were a great leader in the Senate, and early on you were more generous than I had any right to expect.”

The former President added, “I would not have been President had it not been for your encouragement and support, and I would not have got most of what I got done without your skill and determination.”

“Even when I was president, he would hang up on me,” Obama said in a 2019 tribute video to Reid, according to reports from Associated Press.

United States Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement on Twitter, “Harry Reid was one of a kind. He was extraordinarily effective and indefatigable in his work to make life better for all Americans – and a generous source of advice and encouragement to me and countless others. He will be greatly missed, across Nevada and throughout America.”
