India on Friday recorded 24,882 new cases of coronavirus, taking its tally to 11,333,728 Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s data released on Saturday showed. This is the highest single-day spike in coronavirus cases this year. A total of 140 deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours. The total number of coronavirus-induced deaths has now reached 158,446.

According to the data, there are 202,022 active COVID-19 cases in the country, while 10,973,260 have recovered.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said that 840,635 samples were tested for the novel coronavirus on Friday. A total of 225,839,273 samples have been tested until now.

According to the ministry, more than 28 million vaccine shots have been administered in the country till Friday.

India has emerged as the second worst-hit country by the virus, the first being the United States. 

As the state of Maharashtra records a steep rise in COVID-19 cases with Pune, Nagpur and Nashik emerging as one of the key hot spots responsible for a better share of total recorded virus cases in India.
