Former President Pranab Mukherjee was cremated at the Lodhi Crematorium on Tuesday. His last rite was performed by his son Abhijit Mukherjee.

The former president died at the Army Research and Referral Hospital on Monday.

Mukherjee’s family and relatives paid their last respects clad in PPE kits while conforming to COVID-19 safeguards.

An Army contingent gave a guard of honour and a gun salute to the former president.

His mortal remains were kept at his residence at 10 Rajaji Marg in New Delhi. Among those who paid their last respects to the former president were Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP President J P Nadda, among others.

The government has announced national mourning for seven days, from August 31 to September 6.

Mukherjee was admitted to the Army Research and Referral Hospital, where he underwent surgery to remove a brain clot. He had tested positive for coronavirus.

He had developed a lung infection and was on ventilator support. He passed away on Monday at the Army Hospital.
