Due to the massive surge in COVID-19 in recent days, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a meeting with the Chief Ministers on Thursday. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, however, will not attend the virtual meeting, PTI reported quoting sources in the state government.

Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay will be present in the meeting, the sources said.

Meanwhile, Banerjee will continue campaigning for the ongoing Assembly polls, whose fourth phase is scheduled for Saturday. 

India is daily adding about 100,000 COVID-19 cases, in recent days. On Wednesday, it recorded 126,789 new cases, the highest-single day spike since the pandemic began last year.

Several states have imposed restrictions, such as night curfew and weekend lockdown, to curb the virus’s spread.

India’s COVID-19 tally stands at 12,928,574, including 166,862 people who died of the disease.
