The Yardbirds guitarist Jeff Beck died of bacterial meningitis on Tuesday, January 10, his representatives have confirmed.

said that the musician died after “suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis” at his home in London, United Kingdon. He was 78 years old.

What is bacterial meningitis?

Bacterial meningitis is an infection that affects the brain and the spinal cord. The bacteria enter the bloodstream and travel to the brain and the spinal cord to infect it.

As a result of the infection, the protective membranes of the brain and the spinal cord are damaged.

How does one get bacterial meningitis?

The most common way by which the disease can occur has been explained above. The bacteria affect the brain and the spinal cord by entering into the bloodstream.

However, it can also occur when the bacteria directly enters the meninges when someone is suffering from an ear or a sinus infection or even a skull fracture. In some cases, it has been observed that surgeries also lead to bacterial meningitis to occur.

Since his death, Beck’s representatives have released a statement via his Twitter profile in which they have sought privacy from the fans at a time of loss and grief for them. 

“On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck’s passing,” the statement said.

“After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he peacefully passed away yesterday. His family ask for privacy while they process this tremendous loss,” the statement added.
