Dr Rachel Levine, who was confirmed by the US Senate as the Assistant Secretary of Health on March 24, 2021, is a leading physician in the US and has had a long career on the intersection of governance and the medical field in the country.

Levine, who has been a known advocate of LGBTQ rights in the United States, was born in 1957 in the city of Wakefield, Massachusetts and completed her primary education from Bellmont Hill School. She later graduated from Harvard University and Tulane Medical School.

Levine’s career in the public service sphere got a jump start in 2015 after getting nominated for the position of Physician General by Pennsylvania’s governor-elect, Tom Wolf. She was later instated as the acting Secretary of Health in 2017 before getting confirmed in 2018. 

Levine, who became the first openly transgender federal officer to be approved by the US Senate, was nominated by US President Joe Biden in January 2021. He said in a statement, “She is a historic and deeply qualified choice to help lead our administration’s health efforts.”

In addition to this, she has also led Pennsylvania’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and has been lauded by numerous state and federal officials for her strategies for the treatment and containment of the deadly virus.
