Eight Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA) militants were killed in an encounter on Sunday in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, along the Nagaland border, a police official said. 

A team of police officers and Assam Rifles personnel, after receiving a tip-off, launched an operation, led by Prakash Sonowal, Additional Superintendent of Police of West Karbi Anglong district.

Moments after exchange of bullets, the armed forces and police officials gunned down eight members of the outlawed organisation, the officer said. 

Initially, six bodies were recovered and two others, who were suspected to the top leaders of DNLA, were spotted later in the day during a search operation in the remote regions, along the borders of Assam and Nagaland.

Four AK-47 rifles and several rounds of ammunition were found in the possession of the slain militants, the police official said.

Search operations had been underway in the district since last week after a priest was killed in Daujiphang area, he said, adding that more details are awaited about the encounter.
