Labour rights activist Nodeep Kaur, who was arrested from a labourers’ protest at Kundli border point on January 12, was granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in an attempt to murder case on Friday. Kaur was arrested on the charges of attempt to murder and extortion. Three cases have been lodged, and she was earlier granted bail in two of the cases that were mainly related to extortion charges.

Kaur, 23, was arrested for allegedly gheraoing an industrial unit and demanding money from a company in Haryana’s Sonipat last month and was lodged in Karnal jail. She was at a labourers’ protest on January 12 at the Kundli border point between Delhi and Haryana, which coincided with then ongoing farmers’ protest. The border point is among the many sites where the protesting farmers are camping over the last few months in protest against farm laws.

The 23-year-old labour rights activist has accused the police of sexual assault under custody, as per media reports, however, the authorities have denied the claims.

The Dalit activist’s counsel has claimed that Kour was “falsely implicated” in the cases registered under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC and other provisions by the Sonipat police.

Kaur’s arrest gained international attention after US Vice President’s niece, Meena Harris on February 6 tweeted: “23-year-old labour rights activist Nodeep Kaur was arrested, tortured and sexually assaulted in police custody.” Meena’s tweet was attached with photos of a mob in India burning her own photo and another of a masked woman holding up a poster demanding Kaur’s release.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court had taken a suo moto cognisance on February 13 of matter pertaining to Kaur’s alleged illegal confinement.
