Capping a month of roller-coaster politics in Rajasthan, the Ashok Gehlot-led Congress will move a confidence motion in the Assembly on Friday, the first day of a special session. This stamp of authority comes a day after Gehlot and ‘rebel’ Sachin Pilot shook hands and patched-up at the Congress Legislative Party meeting in Jaipur meant to announce the return of all the 19 rebels.

Gehlot had expressed his willingness to seek a trust vote, even when the Pilot camp was sequestered in Haryana, writing several letters to Governor Kalraj Mishra seeking a special session. The Congress has 107 MLAs in the 200-member assembly, which includes 19 rebels. It also has support of 5 MLAs of smaller parties and 13 Independents taking the total to 125 MLAs. The BJP has 72 MLAs and support of 3 Independents.

The Congress announcement to seek a confidence vote came hours after the Opposition BJP said it will move a no-confidence motion during the session.

Welcoming the rebels back into the party fold at the CLP meet, Gehlot, 69, advocated ‘forget and forgive’ adding that proving a majority without 19 MLAs would not have made him happy. He also assured everyone that grievances of all would be addressed ‘whenever they want’.

Pilot, speaking at the CLP meet, reportedly expressed gratitude to the MLAs across 33 districts for working with him during his tenure as the PCC chief and said he is happy that the party has listened to what the MLAs had to say in terms of what needs to be done for a more responsive government, what changes need to be done and what roadmap should be there to win the next assembly elections.

The meeting came after a month of bitter rivalry between Gehlot and Pilot, 42, that saw the younger leader being sacked from his posts of the deputy Chief Minister and state Congress chief. The crisis, single-handedly handled by Gehlot, ended with Pilot  returning and a committee being set up to look into the grievances of the rebels.
