Indian spinner Axar Patel on Thursday accumulated a total of eleven wickets in the third Test. The spinner from Gujarat made his mark in front
of the Motera crowd, picking up six wickets in the first innings and five wickets in the second.

Patel’s performance in the match has been instrumental in
bringing India an initial upper hand, and again the same in the second innings.
Bowling figures of 38/6 in the first innings, and 32/5 in the second innings
prompted a quick ending of the England batting order.

Patel rocked the very basic structure of the England innings,
as he immediately made Zak Crawley and Jonny Bairstow leave the crease in his
first over during the second England innings.

Subsequently, after taking his last wicket in the match,
Patel also became the first Indian bowler to claim a total of 11 wickets in a Day-Night
Test match.

The previous record was held by Australia’s Pat Cummins, who
accomplished the feat in 2019-2020 against Sri Lanka in Brisbane.

The match in its entirety has been almost all about
spinners, as Joe Root and Jack Leach for England, as Patel and Ashwin for India,
secured big wins in the spin bowling department.

Significantly, the pitch has left almost nothing for pacers,
as renowned fast bowlers like England’s Jofra Archer and India’s Ishant Sharma
have only been managed to pick up a wicket each.
