A Delhi court on
Monday awarded death penalty to prime accused of Batla House encounter case Ariz Khan, allegedly associated
with the terrorist organisation Indian Mujahideen, for the murder of police inspector Mohan Chand Sharma.

The incident took
place nearly a week after five serial blasts hit Delhi on September 13, 2008, killing at least 30 people. Following the blasts, a team
from Delhi Police Special Cell led by inspector Mohan Chand Sharma shot two suspected
Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorists in an apartment near Khalilullah mosque in Delhi’s
Batla House area on September 19, 2008.

Inspector Sharma,
who was leading the operation, took three bullets and succumbed to injuries in
the incident. He died a day later.

September 13, 2008: 5 serial bombings rocked New Delhi killing 39 people and injuring 159, as per PTI.

September 19, 2008: Encounter between the police and terrorist took place, FIR lodged.

July 3, 2009: Accused Ariz Khan and Shahzad Ahmad declared proclaimed offender by the court.

February 2, 2010: Shahzad Ahmad arrested from Lucknow.

October 1, 2010:
Investigation of the case transferred to Crime Branch of Delhi Police.

July 30, 2013: Indian Mujahideen terrorist and co- accused Shahzad Ahmed awarded life imprisonment.  

February 14,
2018
: Ariz Khan, on run for almost a decade, arrested.

March 8, 2021:
Ariz Khan convicted for murder and other related offences.

March 15, 2021: Delhi Court
awards death penalty to Ariz Khan and imposes Rs 11 lakh fine.
