The 82-year-old mother of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker has died after sustaining injuries during an attack by Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters in West Bengal last month, the saffron party claimed Monday.

Following the attack, in North 24 Parganas district’s Nimta area, BJP workers held a protest outside a police station and burnt tyres, PTI reported.

Meanwhile, the TMC have dismissed their involvement in any attack, suggesting the octagenerian woman might have died due to age-related illnesses.

Expressing his anguish over the attack and the woman’s death, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said “the pain and wounds of the family will haunt” West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

“Anguished over the demise of Bengal’s daughter Shova Majumdar ji, who was brutally beaten by TMC goons,” Shah said in a tweet.

“The pain & wounds of her family will haunt Mamata didi for long. Bengal will fight for a violence-free tomorrow, Bengal will fight for a safer state for our sisters & mothers,” he added.

The woman was being treated at a hospital for 27 days since she sustained the injuries in what Union Minister Debasree Chaudhari said was an attack by the TMC on February 27.

However, TMC MP Sougata Roy said, “The incident has no relation with politics and the BJP is unnecessarily trying to cash on a death.”

“Any death is unfortunate and tragic. TMC men were not involved in any attack. We have information that she might have died due to old age-related ailments,”  he added.
