The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) on Monday informed the Delhi High Court that it has agreed to include transgender as a separate category in the gender classification of prisoners in their annual publication of prison statistics 2020, PTI reported.

The Centre further told the court that a communication has been issued to all the states and union territories.

The step came after a public suit was filed against the authority in the court to recognise and classify transgenders as a separate gender in their annual publication of prison statistics.

The submission was made before a bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan by Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Chetan Sharma.

The Centre’s responded to the court’s query on December 1 as to what steps it has taken for including data of transgender prisoners in its latest prison statistics reports.
