Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for over 10 hours on Monday in a National Herald newspaper-linked money laundering probe.

Officials noted that the Congress MP has been asked to appear before the agency again tomorrow since questions regarding some matters were not covered in today’s interrogation

Gandhi left the ED office around 11.10 PM today, after facing the questions.

The 51-year-old politician, who entered the headquarters of the federal agency in central Delhi around 11.10 am, finished some brief legal proceedings and marked his attendance and was put to questioning about 20 minutes later.

The ED allowed him to leave for lunch around 2:10 PM and he returned for questioning again, around 3:30 pm, as per the officials.

The probe pertains to alleged financial irregularities in the party-promoted Young Indian that owns the National Herald newspaper.

The National Herald is published by the Associated Journals Limited (AJL) and owned by Young Indian Pvt Limited.

Rahul Gandhi isn’t the only Congress member to stare down the barrel of an ED interrogation. His mother, and party president, Sonia Gandhi is also slated to meet the ED on June 23. However, many remain unfazed by the recent turn of events with Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot commenting that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is misusing central probe agencies. He labelled the current actions as being motivated by “political vendetta”. Further, Ghelot noted, “The Congress is competent to deal with the situation”.

Former Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat shares his views and stated that the current government is trying to drown out opposition leaders’ voices. Noting that this is now a fight for democracy, Rawat added, “Now, a satyagraha will take place at every corner”. 

In the morning, the Congress party had already stated in a press conference that all fund movements, in this case, have been legitimate.
