A 58-year-old uncle of cricketer Suresh Raina was killed in an attack by robbers, while four of his family members sustained injuries, PTI quoted police as saying on Saturday.

The
incident took place in Punjab’s Pathankot district on the intervening night of August 19 and 20. The deceased has been identified as Ashok Kumar, a
government contractor.

Police said
three or four members of the infamous “Kale Kachhewala” gang had attacked Kumar
and his family, who were sleeping at the terrace of their house in Pathankot’s
Thariyal village.

Kumar sustained
head injuries and died the same night, police said.

The police had earlier said that they cannot confirm the relation between Kumar and Raina.

However, Kumar’s elder brother Shyam Lal confirmed he was Raina’s uncle, adding that the the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batsman is expected to visit the village.

The robbers
fled with some cash and gold from the house, police said. Kumar’s 80-year-old
mother Satya Devi, wife Asha Devi and two sons, Apin and Kaushal, were among those
injured.

Pathankot
SP Prabhjot Singh Virk said that Satya Devi was
discharged from hospital, while the others are still undergoing treatment.

Earlier today, CSK confirmed Suresh Raina will be unavailable for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament in UAE.

The franchise’s CEO KS Viswanathan said that Raina “has returned to India for personal reasons and will be unavailable for the remainder of the IPL season”.
